What did you recently finish reading?

 

I finished Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevado just this morning. This was really quick read, due mostly to the fact that's it's written in verse and it's written so beautifully as well. I really did enjoy this book so much, the two characters of Camino and Yahaira had really distinct voices and just watching them discover each other and develop their sisterly bond was lovely to read. There are so many quotable lines in here as well and it had great examples of strong women and sisterhood. 

 

What are you currently reading?

 

Forever (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #3) by Maggie Stiefvater is my current physical read. I've literally only read the prologue so I don't have many thoughts at the minute. I'm glad we're getting a new perspective in this one but I'm not sure if that means there's going to be 5+ POV's which could be a bit much. I'm glad I'm finishing this series off (well, other then the companion novel) and hopefully it will be a quick read. 

 

What do you think you'll read next?

The Girl in the Tower (Winternight Trilogy #2) by Katherine Arden is what I'll be picking up physically after Forever. After reading The Bear and the Nightingale last month, I'm really excited to move onto the second book. The first one was a five star so I'm excited but apprehensive about this one. I'm also reading this book for mini polarthon which is being held this weekend so I'm going to try and smash it out in three days!

 

Orphaned and cast out as a witch by her village, Vasya’s options are few: resign herself to life in a convent, or allow her older sister to make her a match with a Moscovite prince. Both doom her to life in a tower, cut off from the vast world she longs to explore. So instead she chooses adventure, disguising herself as a boy and riding her horse into the woods. When a battle with some bandits who have been terrorizing the countryside earns her the admiration of the Grand Prince of Moscow, she must carefully guard the secret of her gender to remain in his good graces—even as she realizes his kingdom is under threat from mysterious forces only she will be able to stop.

 

Fox 8 by George Saunders will be my next ebook pick. This is super short, only around 50 pages, so I'll read it all in one go either today or tomorrow. This for the Reindeer Readathon to read a book with a fox on the cover and I thought it would be a quick one to get done early in the month.    

 

Fox 8 has always been known as the daydreamer in his pack, the one his fellow foxes regarded with a knowing snort and a roll of the eyes. That is, until Fox 8 develops a unique skill: He teaches himself to speak “Yuman” by hiding in the bushes outside a house and listening to children’s bedtime stories. The power of language fuels his abundant curiosity about people—even after “danjer” arrives in the form of a new shopping mall that cuts off his food supply, sending Fox 8 on a harrowing quest to help save his pack.

Top Ten Tuesday | Books I Want to Read Again

Books I Want To Read Again and to be honest, I'm not a massive re-reader in general mostly because I'd rather read brand new books that I know nothing about. I'll admit there are few that definitely feel comforting to go back to now and again and there are a few books in my list that I want to read again so I can continue on with the series.

This meme was created by E. @ Local Bee Hunter's Nook and you can find the announcement post here. Also, side note, these aren't necessarily books that I own physically but they're all on my Goodreads TBR and they'll mostly be the five most recently added.  

This Week's Prompt is...

Shorties. I don't tend to read a lot of shorter fiction or short story collections but there are a few that have caught my eye as well as a couple of classic works that get recommended a lot.

 

The Body by Stephen King   

In 1960s America, four young boys go on a journey to search for the body of a boy killed by a train. As they travel, they discover how cruel the world can be, but also how wondrous.

 

The movie is one of my favourites of all time but I've never read this short story and it's one that I've been meaning to get to for a while. It's only 80 pages so I should be able to squeeze it in somewhere. 

 

Dubliners by James Joyce

This work of art reflects life in Ireland at the turn of the last century, and by rejecting euphemism, reveals to the Irish their unromantic realities. Each of the 15 stories offers glimpses into the lives of ordinary Dubliners, and collectively they paint a portrait of a nation. 

This is a really beloved collection of stories that examines life in Ireland, it's highly regarded and I really want to get to it soon.

 

Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

A wife refuses her husband's entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store's prom dresses. One woman's surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella Especially Heinous, Machado reimagines every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naively assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgangers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes.

Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious, Her Body and Other Parties swings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction.

Every single one of these stories sounds so interesting. I love feminist fiction so I'm hopeful I'll love this too.    

 

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry

With a timeless charm it tells the story of a little boy who leaves the safety of his own tiny planet to travel the universe, learning the vagaries of adult behavior through a series of extraordinary encounters. His personal odyssey culminates in a voyage to Earth and further adventures. 

I adore the film adaptation that I saw a few years ago but I'd really like to read the source material especially as it's the most translated book in the French language!  

 

Together, Apart by Erin A. Craig et al 

Erin Craig "delivers" on a story about a new girl in town and the cute pizza delivery boy, Auriane Desombre captures our hearts with teens communicating through window signs, and Bill Konigsberg takes us along on daily walks with every step bringing us closer to love. There's flirting and romance from Rachael Lippincott, a tale of a determined girl with a mask-making business from Erin Hahn, and a music-inspired love connection from Sajni Patel. Brittney Morris turns enemies to lovers with the help of a balcony herb garden, Jennifer Yen writes an unconventional romance that starts outside a hospital, and Natasha Preston's teens discover each other--and their love story--in a storybook oak tree.

Just as the UK went back into lockdown I discovered this short story collection just recently published and these stories sounds so sweet amidst the current situation.

December 2020 TBR + Reindeer Readathon & Mini Polarthon!

Honestly, how is it nearly December already?? 2020 is almost over (thank god) and now is the time when all of us bookish people panic and try and squeeze in as many books as possible in to the remaining weeks. I'm feeling ok with my reading at the minute though, I already hit my Goodreads goal and now I'm just trying to choose some books that'll put me in a wintery mood. I do like seasonal reading as I like feeling cozy and festive and having books that match that feeling. There a few books that I want to try and read before the year is officially up and we enter into 2021 though. 

I'm onto the final book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy aka Forever by Maggie Stiefvater which actually isn't the final book because there's a 3.5 called Sinner which I own and will be reading in January but whatever! I'm also continuing with the Winternight trilogy and I'm going to be reading the second book, The Girl in the Tower. At the time I'm writing this, I'm actually in the middle of the first book and really enjoying it so I'm excited for the rest of the series. 

My festive reads include 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Eston which just sounds so cute and romantic plus I'm going to be reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue this month which I can't wait for!! Finally, I actually forgot to include a non-fiction book for this month in my planned out TBR so I might have to squeeze one in somewhere if I can but I do already have a lot on there. My classic for the month though is going to be A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and I'm going to try and read this on Christmas Eve plus my edition has beautiful illustrations!

Mini Polarthon  

Jade from jadeyraereads is hosting a mini round of her polar fantasy readathon in the first weekend of December and I thought it would be fun to participate. I don't read much polar fantasy but it's a genre I find myself really drawn to so I thought having a go at the smaller version would be a good idea to ease myself in. It's happening from Friday December 4th until Sunday December 6th so it's a nice short one to start off the month. I've chosen three books to see me through the weekend although I probably won't complete all of them but I chose one adult, one young adult and one middle grade so there's a mixture of what I can choose.

Reindeer Readathon 

I also decided to participate in the Reindeer Readathon which is hosted by Breakeven Books and this is a month long one so it lasts the whole of December. I loved the prompts for this one although I stuggled for a while on some of them, made  harder by the fact that we can't double up on prompts either! There's also ways to earn extra points as well by reading a book over 500 pages and completing an extra prompt at the end. I'm officially on Team Mistletoe so I'm excited to get started and earn my team some points!

The End of the Year Book Tag | 2020

I've seen this tag floating around a lot of blogs now that we're nearing the end of the year and I thought it would be a great way to see what books I still need to read in the little time we have left in 2020. God, I can't believe how fast and yet how slow this year has gone, it's pretty bizarre to say the least! This tag has been going for a while so I'm not sure who actually created it but I personally saw it over on The Book Dutchesses so definitely check out their post.  

Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

I don't really tend to start books and then not finish them. If I'm not enjoying a book and I don't think I'll finish it, I'll DNF it. I'm not really one of those people that can put a book down for a week or even more and then pick it back up again, I'd probably end up forgetting what happened in the section that I had read. There is one book that I started but couldn't get into but have every intention of starting again and that's Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. I couldn't really get into when I started it earlier this year but I still really want to read it but I'm not sure if that will be this year.  

 

Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year? 

  

 

I am a bit of a seasonal reader but not completely, if you know what I mean, there are certain types of book and genres that I kind of feel more drawn to though. Because the weather's getting colder and it's darker outside, I tend to be more inclined to pick up thrillers, books with darker themes and books with wintery settings although I still like to have a mix of genre's so I'm not just reading the same type of story after story. Some books I read last year around this time were Beartown by Frederik Backman, Gothic Tales by Elizabeth Gaskell, Northern Lights by Philip Pullman and Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend.      

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

 

There are actually a handful of books being released towards the end of November and December that I'm anticipating but it's unlikely that I'll get to them this year with my TBR already out of control. I've been trying not to go crazy on Goodreads and add every new release I like the sound of but these three have me pretty excited. They are This is Not a Ghost Story by Andrea Portes, Coming Up For Air by Nicole Tyndall and The Good Girls by Claire Eliza Bartlett.    

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

 

My December TBR is already pretty much planned out because I have a current obsession with Notion and making elaborate TBR lists on there! I also have a few readathons that I want to participate in so I've been thinking of books that could fit into some of those prompts. I'd have to say that the three books that I'm most excited to get to are The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone.

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year?

I wasn't actually planning on reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue this year but I just found that it's the group book for the Reindeer Readathon and I happened to have just ordered it so I decided, what the heck, I'll read it in December instead! With so much hype around it, I am worried that my expectations are too high but this book sounds right up my street and I'm very very excited to read it.  Who knows, it definitely could become my favourite read of the year!  

Have you already started making reading plans for 2021?

I actually have but tentatively! There are a few books that have come in/are coming in Owlcrate boxes that I'm really excited for, they always choose such great releases but it's just finding the time to squeeze them in that's the problem. I also have some library ebooks and a couple of e-arcs that I still need to get to in order to bring my ratio back up. I decided this year that I wasn't going to request anything else on Netgalley until I'd submitted reviews for all of the books still on my shelf which is around 10 at the minute and my ratio is still only around the 56% mark. Hopefully, 2021 will be a great reading year and a great year in general after the disaster 2020 has been!

What did you recently finish reading?

I finished The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden yesterday and it really blew me away. The fact that this so universally loved does make you worry that you're going to be in the minority that doesn't but thankfully I loved it too. This is such a beautifully written book, I adored the main character Vasya and the antagonists were so clever. The atmosphere too was incredible, this really is the perfect time to read these books because you feel like you're right there in Russia in the middle of winter. 

 

What are you currently reading?

Spin by Colleen Nelson is an ARC that I meant to get too last year but never got around to it. It's a YA contemporary that follows Dizzy as she strives to become a DJ as well as discovering more about her absent mother. I am enjoying this book, I'm liking the three different perspectives of Dizzy, her brother and her dad but I'm just not hooked yet on the plot. I'm only 25% in so my mind could change.   

I'm on chapter 7 of Briar's Book (Circle of Magic #4) by Tamora Pierce and still really liking listening to these audiobooks. They're really well read by the cast and would definitely recommend if you like full cast audiobooks. As for the plot of this one, it's good and still really liking the characters but it was a bit of a surprise to find that this one revolves around an epidemic spreading throughout their home! It feels weird listening to a book about a speading infection when we're currently in a similar situation!

 

I just started Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, I read the first three chapters last night and I already love it so much! I knew I was going to love Jane Austen and her characters and her romances and I only needed to read the first 20 pages to know her books will be some of my favourites. I of course know the plot, the 2005 film is one of my favourites, but I'm really excited to continue reading this one as soon as possible. 

 

What do you think you'll read next?

I'm going to pick up I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai again after I finish Pride and Prejudice. I started it last week and read the first chapter or two before putting it down because I wasn't really in the mood for non-fiction. I do really want to read it before the end of the month though and so I'll spend the last couple of days of November reading it. 

 

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

I Am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

Top Ten Tuesday | Books By Indigenous Authors I Want To Read

Thanksgiving Freebie but seeing as how I'm British and don't celebrate Thanksgiving, I thought I'd highlight ten books by Indigenous authors instead. I do really want to start reading more from Indigenous authors and these are some of the ones that interest me the most.

 

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

A god will return
When the earth and sky converge

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.

Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain. 

I haven't heard too much about this one but it's been getting some amazing reviews and the world this book is set in sounds so interesting.

Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger

Imagine an America very similar to our own. It’s got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream.

There are some differences. This America been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday, like the ability to make an orb of light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day.

Elatsoe lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered, in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. The picture-perfect facade of Willowbee masks gruesome secrets, and she will rely on her wits, skills, and friends to tear off the mask and protect her family. 

I've mentioned this book on my blog before and it just sounds like a beautiful magical realism read.

Crooked Hallelujah by Kelli Jo Ford

It's 1974 in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and fifteen-year-old Justine grows up in a family of tough, complicated, and loyal women, presided over by her mother, Lula, and Granny. After Justine's father abandoned the family, Lula became a devout member of the Holiness Church - a community that Justine at times finds stifling and terrifying. But Justine does her best as a devoted daughter, until an act of violence sends her on a different path forever. Crooked Hallelujah tells the stories of Justine--a mixed-blood Cherokee woman-- and her daughter, Reney, as they move from Eastern Oklahoma's Indian Country in the hopes of starting a new, more stable life in Texas amid the oil bust of the 1980s. However, life in Texas isn't easy, and Reney feels unmoored from her family in Indian Country. Against the vivid backdrop of the Red River, we see their struggle to survive in a world--of unreliable men and near-Biblical natural forces, like wildfires and tornados--intent on stripping away their connections to one another and their very ideas of home. 

 

 Here for a historical novel that explores the bond between mothers and daughters.

Son of a Trickster by Eden Robinson

Everyone knows a guy like Jared: the burnout kid in high school who sells weed cookies and has a scary mom who's often wasted and wielding some kind of weapon. Jared does smoke and drink too much, and he does make the best cookies in town, and his mom is a mess, but he's also a kid who has an immense capacity for compassion and an impulse to watch over people more than twice his age, and he can't rely on anyone for consistent love and support, except for his flatulent pit bull, Baby Killer (he calls her Baby)--and now she's dead.

Jared can't count on his mom to stay sober and stick around to take care of him. He can't rely on his dad to pay the bills and support his new wife and step-daughter. Jared is only sixteen but feels like he is the one who must stabilize his family's life, even look out for his elderly neighbours. But he struggles to keep everything afloat...and sometimes he blacks out. And he puzzles over why his maternal grandmother has never liked him, why she says he's the son of a trickster, that he isn't human. Mind you, ravens speak to him--even when he's not stoned.

You think you know Jared, but you don't.

 

That line "Ravens speak to him - even when he's not stoned" just has me so intrigued for some reason and it feels like it's going to be my kind of weird.

 

LaRose by Louise Erdrich

North Dakota, late summer, 1999. Landreaux Iron stalks a deer along the edge of the property bordering his own. He shoots with easy confidence—but when the buck springs away, Landreaux realizes he’s hit something else, a blur he saw as he squeezed the trigger. When he staggers closer, he realizes he has killed his neighbor’s five-year-old son, Dusty Ravich.

The youngest child of his best friend, Pete Ravich, Dusty was best friends with Landreaux’s five-year-old son, LaRose. The two families have always been close, sharing food, clothing, and rides into town; their children played together despite going to different schools, and Landreaux’s wife, Emmaline, is half sister to Dusty’s mother, Nola. Horrified at what he’s done, the recovered alcoholic turns to tradition—the sweat lodge—for guidance, and finds a way forward. Following an ancient means of retribution, he and Emmaline will give LaRose to the grieving Peter and Nola. “Our son will be your son now,” they tell them. 

 

The actual Goodreads synopsis is longer then this but this chunk was all I really needed to read before my interest was piqued and to be honest I kind of want to go into this one blind.

 

Where the Dead Sit Talking by Brandon Hobson  

With his single mother in jail, Sequoyah, a fifteen-year-old Cherokee boy, is placed in foster care. Literally and figuratively scarred by his mother’s years of substance abuse, Sequoyah keeps mostly to himself, living with his emotions pressed deep below the surface. At least until he meets seventeen-year-old Rosemary, a troubled artist who also lives with the family.

Sequoyah and Rosemary bond over their shared Native American background and tumultuous paths through the foster care system, but as Sequoyah’s feelings toward Rosemary deepen, the precariousness of their lives and the scars of their pasts threaten to undo them both. 

 

This sounds emotional and poignant and just a beautiful coming of age story.

 

Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq

A girl grows up in Nunavut in the 1970s. She knows joy, and friendship, and parents' love. She knows boredom, and listlessness, and bullying. She knows the tedium of the everyday world, and the raw, amoral power of the ice and sky, the seductive energy of the animal world. She knows the ravages of alcohol, and violence at the hands of those she should be able to trust. She sees the spirits that surround her, and the immense power that dwarfs all of us.

When she becomes pregnant, she must navigate all this. 

Another one that's bound to get me emotional, and I like the sound of the mixture of genres used to create this story. 

The Things She's Seen by Ambelin & Ezekiel Kwaymullina

Nothing's been the same for Beth Teller since the day she died.

Her dad is drowning in grief. He's also the only one who has been able to see and hear her since the accident. But now she's got a mystery to solve, a mystery that will hopefully remind her detective father that he is still alive, that there is a life after Beth that is still worth living.

Who is Isobel Catching, and why is she able to see Beth, too? What is her connection to the crime Beth's father has been sent to investigate--a gruesome fire at a home for troubled youth that left an unidentifiable body behind? What happened to the people who haven't been seen since the fire?

As Beth and her father unravel the mystery, they find a shocking and heartbreaking story lurking beneath the surface of a small town, and a friendship that lasts beyond one life and into another... 

 

As soon as I read that first line I was like, yes I have to read this! I love a good small town mystery.

 

The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones    

Seamlessly blending classic horror and a dramatic narrative with sharp social commentary, The Only Good Indians follows four American Indian men after a disturbing event from their youth puts them in a desperate struggle for their lives. Tracked by an entity bent on revenge, these childhood friends are helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a violent, vengeful way.

This book has been getting a fair bit of hype this year and so I want to jump on the bandwagon! Plus, the author is described as the Jordan Peele of horror and therefore I have to pick it up!

An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

Today in the United States, there are more than five hundred federally recognized Indigenous nations comprising nearly three million people, descendants of the fifteen million Native people who once inhabited this land. The centuries-long genocidal program of the US settler-colonial regimen has largely been omitted from history. Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz offers a history of the United States told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples and reveals how Native Americans, for centuries, actively resisted expansion of the US empire.

Spanning more than four hundred years, this classic bottom-up peoples’ history radically reframes US history and explodes the silences that have haunted our national narrative. 

I definitely want to educate myself more on the way that Indigenous people have been overlooked throughout history and this book has been recommended as a good place to start.
