#5OnMyTBR | Literary Fiction

This meme was created by E. @ Local Bee Hunter's Nook and you can find the announcement post here. Also, side note, these aren't necessarily books that I own physically but they're all on my Goodreads TBR and they'll mostly be the five most recently added.

This Week's Prompt is...

Literary Fiction! Literary fiction isn't a genre a read a ton from and I also find it difficult to label a book primarily as literary when there's often another more recognisable genre in there too but here's five I think fit this weeks prompt.

Top Ten Tuesday | Books With Nature On The Cover

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature that highlights ten books that all relate to a certain topic and is  hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This Weeks Topic Is...

Books With Nature On The Cover! I love cover prompts as it gives me a good excuse to trawl through my Goodreads shelves and match different covers to the prompt. Here's a few I found that feature flowers, plants, outdoor scenes etc...

This Week's Prompt is...

Fae! I actually kinda struggled to find five books on my TBR just because fae/fairies aren't really something I gravitate to in books but I managed to round some up that I have some slight interest in reading at some point.

Stacking the Shelves | April 2021

Stacking the Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality that highlights all the books you've recently added to your shelves. Here's all the books I hauled in April!

I got sent my very first physical ARC by Harper Collins this month and I still can't believe I managed it!! My blog is super tiny so I didn't think I stood a chance but I'm so happy I did. I recieved a copy of Incredible Doom by Matthew Bogart and Jesse Holden which is a YA graphic novel set in the 90's that follows a group of teenagers during the 'age of the internet'. So excited to read it!

It’s the dawn of a new age…the age of the internet.

Allison is drowning under the weight of her manipulative stage magician father. When he brings home the family’s first computer, she escapes into a thrilling new world where she meets Samir, a like-minded new online friend who has just agreed to run away from home with her.

After moving to a new town and leaving all of his friends behind, Richard receives a mysterious note in his locker with instructions on how to connect to “Evol BBS,” a dial-in bulletin board system, and meets a fierce punk named Tina who comes into his life and shakes his entire world view loose.

Unlikely alliances, first love, and minor crime sprees abound in this teen graphic novel debut about making connections while your world is falling apart.

In celebration of my new job, I splurged a little and treated myself to some new books! These two were bought in the closing down sale of my local WHSmith. I've heard good things about The Expanse series and I know the Amazon Prime series is pretty popular too.

I also made a little Amazon order because I couldn't resist plus I'm employed now so I have a little money to spare! These are three books off my wishlist that I've been coveting for a while particularly I Hate Fairyland which I snapped up when I saw it had been reduced to like £3.50, a bargain for a graphic novel!

I managed to be pretty good this month and I actually only bought one ebook the entire time and it was only 99p! Plus, I also got my Amazon first read for the month as well.

Lastly, I also borrowed two book from my library app; an ebook and an audiobook. I've started to exhaust most of the books I want to read from the app so fingers crossed the physical libraries are back open soon 🤞

#5OnMyTBR | Purple Covers

This meme was created by E. @ Local Bee Hunter's Nook and you can find the announcement post here. Also, side note, these aren't necessarily books that I own physically but they're all on my Goodreads TBR and they'll mostly be the five most recently added.

This Week's Prompt is...

Purple Covers! I love the cover colour prompts as all the different shades look so pretty grouped together!

1. The Afterlife of the Party by Marlene Perez

When my best friend Skyler told me about this party in the Hollywood Hills, I was less than enthused. As it turned out, my feelings were more than justified. That party ruined my life.

Tansy didn’t even want to go to the party. It’s hard enough living in one of your best friend’s shadows and secretly in love with your other best friend.

And now she’s leaving it a vampire.

Now her best friend Skyler is stuck on the road trip from hell, on tour as a groupie with a literal band of vamps. Tansy sets out with Vaughn, her other BFF turned maybe more, to save Skylar’s life and take down the band. But when they find themselves in the middle of a vampire war, will Tansy be able to make the ultimate sacrifice to save her friends?

Why I want to read it ✨

→ BAND OF VAMPIRES
→ Snarky tone
→ Road trip!!

2. Jane Anonymous by Laurie Faria Stolarz

“Jane” was just your typical 17-year-old getting ready to start her senior year. She had a part-time job she enjoyed, an awesome best friend, overbearing but loving parents, and a crush on a boy who was taking her to see her favorite band. She never would’ve imagined that in her town where nothing ever happens, a series of small coincidences would lead to a devastating turn of events that would forever change her life.

Now, it’s been three months since “Jane” escaped captivity and returned home. Three months of being that girl who was kidnapped, the girl who was held by a “monster.” But, what if everything you thought you knew―everything you thought you experienced―turned out to be a lie?

Why I want to read it ✨

→ Finding Carter vibes
→ YA thriller
→ Escaped captivity

3. A Wicked Magic by Sasha Laurens

Dan and Liss are witches. The Black Book granted them that power. Harnessing that power feels good, especially when everything in their lives makes them feel powerless.

During a spell gone wrong, Liss's boyfriend is snatched away by an evil entity and presumed dead. Dan and Liss's friendship dies that night, too. How can they practice magic after the darkness that they conjured?

Months later, Liss discovers that her boyfriend is alive, trapped underground in the grips of an ancient force. She must save him, and she needs Dan and the power of The Black Book to do so. Dan is quickly sucked back into Liss's orbit and pushes away her best friend, Alexa. But Alexa has some big secrets she's hiding and her own unique magical disaster to deal with.

When another teenager disappears, the girls know it's no coincidence. What greedy magic have they awakened? And what does it want with these teens it has stolen?

Why I want to read it ✨

→ CAOS meets The Craft
→ Disappearing teenagers
→ WITCHES!

4. All This Time by Mikki Daughtry & Rachel Lippincott

Kyle and Kimberly have been the perfect couple all through high school, but when Kimberly breaks up with him on the night of their graduation party, Kyle’s entire world upends—literally. Their car crashes and when he awakes, he has a brain injury. Kimberly is dead. And no one in his life could possibly understand.

Until Marley. Marley is suffering from her own loss, a loss she thinks was her fault. And when their paths cross, Kyle sees in her all the unspoken things he’s feeling.

As Kyle and Marley work to heal each other’s wounds, their feelings for each other grow stronger. But Kyle can’t shake the sense that he’s headed for another crashing moment that will blow up his life as soon as he’s started to put it back together.

And he’s right.

Why I want to read it ✨

→ Themes of grief
→ Finding comfort in each other
→ Enjoyed Five Feet Apart

5. Welcome to Night Vale by Joseph Fink & Jeffrey Cranor

Located in a nameless desert somewhere in the great American Southwest, Night Vale is a small town where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are all commonplace parts of everyday life. It is here that the lives of two women, with two mysteries, will converge.

Nineteen-year-old Night Vale pawn shop owner Jackie Fierro is given a paper marked "King City" by a mysterious man in a tan jacket holding a deer skin suitcase. Everything about him and his paper unsettles her, especially the fact that she can't seem to get the paper to leave her hand, and that no one who meets this man can remember anything about him. Jackie is determined to uncover the mystery of King City and the man in the tan jacket before she herself unravels.

Night Vale PTA treasurer Diane Crayton's son, Josh, is moody and also a shape shifter. And lately Diane's started to see her son's father everywhere she goes, looking the same as the day he left years earlier, when they were both teenagers. Josh, looking different every time Diane sees him, shows a stronger and stronger interest in his estranged father, leading to a disaster Diane can see coming, even as she is helpless to prevent it.

Diane's search to reconnect with her son and Jackie's search for her former routine life collide as they find themselves coming back to two words: "King City". It is King City that holds the key to both of their mysteries, and their futures...if they can ever find it.

Why I want to read it ✨

→ Mysterious town setting
→ Sci-Fi/Horror mash up
→ From the creators of the podcast

April 2021 Reading Wrap Up

I'm sorry, how are we already in May?? Christmas felt like it was yesterday! April ended up being a fairly average month, I read 7 books in total. I dipped a little towards the end but I'm blaming that on the fact that I started a new job, I'm now just constantly tired and I also got extremely ill at the end of the month! Also a little disappointed in myself for not managing to finish Crooked Kingdom before the Netflix show aired but in the end it didn't really matter as the show doesn't take anything from that book anyway. I have no idea how May is going to go but hopefully I can get a fair bit of reading done 🤞
