Top Ten Tuesday | Favourite Middle Grade Covers of 2020

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature that highlights ten books that all relate to a certain topic and is  hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This Weeks Topic Is...

A Cover Freebie! There are so many beautiful book covers out there and I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover and all that but I'd be lying if I didn't say that covers are sometimes a massive part of why I'm drawn to a book. Now, I haven't read a whole lot of middle grade but they always have such amazing illustrated covers and I love how they perfectly reflect the contents of the book. So today i'm going to highlight some of my favourite middle grade covers of the year.

Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger

I think this cover is so beautiful. I love the illustration style and how wintery it makes me feel. Looking on Goodreads though a lot of people have shelved this as YA even though it was on a middle grade list... regardless I still adore this cover! This book also has an asexual MC and is written by an Apache author!

King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender

How stunning are the colours used on this cover?? This is also getting amazing reviews from bloggers that I love so i'm very excited to read this in the future. This sounds like a poignant read and apparently has great black and gay rep in it from both the MC and side characters.

A Wolf for a Spell by Karah Sutton

Fantasy middle grade covers are often in a class of their own. They have such beautiful illustrations on the covers and this one is no exception! This book is a retelling of Baba Yaga and this cover is definitely inspired by Slavic folklore and all of it's wonder and magic.

The Vanderbeekers: Lost and Found by Karina Yan Glaser

I just adore bright and beautiful covers, they give me so much joy to look at and they're often the covers I'm drawn to first. I love this image as well, maybe because I've always dreamed of having a rooftop space to hang out on. This is actually the fourth book in a series that follows five siblings who live in a brownstone house in New York and all of their adventures.

Martin Mclean, Middle School Queen by Alyssa Zaczek

I just think this book cover is so much fun. I think this cover was also designed by Risa Rodil who's designs I absolutely adore! Her style is so unique that as soon as I saw this cover I knew instantly who had designed it. This book follows Martin has he discovers the glamourous world of drag queens and essentially becomes brave enough to be his true self.

Echo Mountain by Lauren Wolk

Again, I'm just a sucker for beautiful illustrations on covers especially ones that capture the books plot and vibe. It's giving off a very rustic vibe which is perfectly suited to this historical middle grade set during the depression-era in Maine. This sounds like an emotional read about the importance of family.

The Forest of Stars by Heather Kassner

I feel like I'm just repeating myself at this point but this cover is just incredible. I love the artwork and the colour palette! It appears very mystical and any hints to the inclusion of a circus or carnival, and i'm totally on board as they are one of my favourite settings in books.

Séance Tea Party by Reimena Yee

This is a graphic novel so of course the illustrations are going to be beautiful! This looks like it would be perfect to read in October if you want something a little more lighthearted and if the cover is anything to go by, the inside art is bound to be just as stunning.

Small Spaces by Katherine Arden

Now, if you're looking for something a little more spooky I think this could definitely fit the bill. This is Katherine Arden's middle grade debut (I own her entire Winternight trilogy but still haven't found the time to pick them up) and it sounds creepily perfect for Halloween.

The StrangeWorlds Travel Agency by L.D. Lapinski

Lastly we have a book that I am just dying to read. This book cover screams fantastical adventure story and the premise has me even more excited. Suitcases that allow you to travel to other worlds? Sold.

Have you read any of the books on my list this week? Which middle grade book covers are your favourites? Leave a comment or link your own Top Ten Tuesday's for me to check out!
