Top Ten Tuesday | My Favourite YA Contemporaries

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature that highlights ten books that all relate to a certain topic and is  hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

Let's get it out in the open. I'm not a huge of fantasy and sci-fi books. *Hides*. Honestly though I don't mind them, they can be ok and everything but I'm definitely a contemporary girl through and through. Sure they can be predictable but I love the wide range of issues they cover and I'm a sucker for a cute romance without all the 'saving the world' stuff getting in the way.

This weeks topic is...

Books from your favourite genre so of course i'm going to stick with my trusty favourite, the good old contemporary. This was much harder then I thought it was going to be. I've read some great contemporaries and therefore I'm becoming harder to please within the genre and I rarely say 'this is my new favourite thing' so I've actually only listed 7 books, my absolute favourites that I always go back to and end up comparing to everything else.

The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

This has been one of my favourite books since I read it years ago. I got the book for my birthday and read it within a couple of hours and I just adored it. I urged my best friend to read it, lent her my copy and after she finished she went out and bought her own cause she loved it as much as I did. I know this book can be quite hit and miss with some people but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

I bang on about this book sooo much but it's only because I love it and want to re-read it all the time. It's just got such a fun summery vibe to it and I can never resist a road trip book. Amy and Roger's relationship is so sweet and is developed so well over the course of their trip. I also love that this book has little playlists of music the character's listened to on their journey, it just adds that little extra something.

All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

This book completely broke my heart when I read it last year. I was in absolute floods of tears when I finished it and if you know me you'll know I'm not really one to cry at books so this was a big deal. I thought it portrayed grief and mental illnesses really well. I adored their little trips to weird attractions around their state and Violet and Finch just really brought out the best in each other.  I have Holding Up The Universe on my shelf but haven't read it yet cause I'm worried it won't live up to this book at all.

What Happens Next by Colleen Clayton

Another book that broke my heart and then put it back together again. This book deals with rape so major trigger warnings but it is portrayed realistically and written so beautifully. This book has such great characters and one of my favourite book boyfriends of all time. Corey is sweet and loving and just the absolute best and I love him so much.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Series by Jenny Han

Some might be suprised that this series is on my list and not the more popular To All The Boys I've Loved Before but I actually read this one first and it just cemented my love for YA contemporaries. Yes it has a love triangle and yes the love triangle is between two brothers and their childhood friend so I can understand that these books aren't going to be for everyone but Jenny Han just writes incredible teen romances. I love the character of Belly and I actually wouldn't have minded how the love triangle ended for once although it was pretty obvious from the beginning who she would choose!

Just One Day by Gayle Forman

I love love love this book. I related so much to Allyson's character and her and Willem are just completely adorable. He brings her out of her shell and she gives him a reason to stop running and gah, I love them. Also this book takes place in some amazing settings (Paris, London, New York, Amsterdam etc) and gave me major wanderlust. The second book written from Willem's point of view wasn't as good as the first but it was amazing to be able to see their respective searches for each other and how they spent the same year apart.

Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Oh look, another Morgan Matson book. But let's face it, she is the queen of YA contemporaries at the moment. Her books are the perfect summer reads and they have such cute romances that I can't resist. This one has the cute romance but it also has a great portrayal of friendship and there's a summer bucket list the main character has to complete! Just a fun read all round.

Have you read any of these books? What did you choose for this weeks genre? Link your own TTT's in the comments for me to check out!

  1. I love Since You've Been Gone. I don't read tons of YA so never actually read any of Morgan Matson's books. I need to remedy that soon. Thanks for the reminder!
