Not my best reading months in terms of quantity but I did find my first 5 star read of the year! I'm in such a reading slump at the moment so I'm not sure how April is going to turn out to be honest but let's look at what I read in March.
Stats
I thought the author told this story in a really interesting way. Revolves around a group of people connected to a young woman at different stages in her life and each chapter focuses on their story and also about a significant dish/recipe in their life. There were definitely some chapters I liked more than others, I enjoyed the foodie focus and the way it all came together in the end.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
I'm trying to read at least four classics this year and this was my pick for the first quarter of the year. I love the whole vibe of Alice in Wonderland and it was a favourite film from childhood but this was my first time properly reading the original novel. It is such a bizarre and whimsical story, nothing makes any sense but I guess that's why it kinda works!
There is a lot of poems and songs in here which weren't really my thing and the weirdness does get a bit much at times but the MinaLima edition has such stunning interactive elements and illustrations that I didn't mind too much.
The Last Good Man by Patience Swift
I'm not sure what made me pick this up in the library but I'm glad that I did cause I liked it for what it was. This is definitely an unknown book, it was published in 2007 but has less than 100 ratings on Goodreads. It's set in a small coastal village and is about an older man who has isolated himself from the community until a strange child washes up on shore and he takes her in.
It's quite an odd book, very slow and character focused. The ending is very inconclusive too, you're left with a lot of unanswered questions but I liked the writing a lot.
I then read the newest book in the PAR Unit series, I really enjoyed the first book when I read it last year. I really like this series, I compared it to Criminal Minds last time and that still stands. Following a group known as headcases who use patterns and puzzles to solve crimes, the latest revolves around a militia group and a serial killer who's motive stumps the agents.
A really strong crime thriller with an interesting group of characters and a gripping plot, delivers on all fronts.
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
My first five star read of 2026 and it's such a good one. I actually listened to this on audio as I bought it a few years ago when I did listen to audiobooks and with the film coming out I wanted to get to it before I watched it. Ray Porter is a fantastic narrator and this was top-tier sci-fi! I loved everything about it from the characters to the writing and especially the friendship that is formed between Grace and Rocky!
The science never bogs it down and it's surprisingly witty as well. The film also did a fantastic job at adapting it, definitely give that a watch as well.
I was in such a massive slump for the last few weeks of the month, I just couldn't get into anything. I knew I needed something engaging to get me reading again and seeing as F1 had just started back up, I was in full motorsport mode. This was exactly what I needed, an interesting look at the ins and outs of the F1 world from someone who's seen it all. It was perfect for someone who only got into F1 5 years ago like I did as it runs through the highlights of the sport from the last year 30 years but for more die hard/longer fans this might not give you anything new but I appreciated it.
