Look, I don't wanna talk about the write off that was April. I read 4 books so I guess I just wasn't in the mood for reading this month. May is already going so much better so there is hope if you're currently in a reading slump!
Stats
The downside of a slump is that I just basically erase all memories of the books I've read recently so I can't even remember what really happened in this book! I remember it revolved around a magical library at Harvard that is fueled by confessions and will then give that person a book recommendation that they need at that moment. The book that is connected to the library is stolen and two past students hunt it down whilst also figuring out their complicated feelings.
There's a lot more to it then that but that's the condensed version. I remember really liking the vibes of this one, dark academia meets fantasy, and I liked the dual timelines we were following. It switches between when Eleanor and Daniel were students and then present day when they are looking for the book. It was a fun read and my second Margot Harrison that I've enjoyed so I definitely want to read more from her.
When you're in a reading slump you just want something fast-paced and familiar to turn things around and this was ideal. I remembered that I had a Karen M. McManus on my shelf and thought - perfect, a YA mystery/thriller will get me back into a reading mood.
I liked this one, I liked the characters and the mystery surrounding a murdered teacher. I wish it had played more into the true crime/podcast element. The build up was really good and whilst I didn't immediately guess the killer, I did think the ending was a little anticlimactic and more could've been done with it.
The Vegetarian by Han Kang
I'm slowly making my way through the NYT's 100 Best Books of the 21st Century (and I do mean slowly) and this was next up on my list. I didn't really know a lot about this book going in to it but for some reason I thought it was gonna be more of a body horror/cannibalism story which it wasn't...
What it was is extremely strange. I still don't even really know how I feel about it or how to explain my thoughts. I think it started off intriguing but the middle section really lost me and then the last third brought it back a bit. I can understand why it's on the list but overall, it wasn't really my vibe.
Sense and Second-Degree Murder by Tirzah Price
I really love Tirzah Price's books, she's quickly become an auto-buy author for me. Her Jane Austen retellings are always fun and entertaining and it doesn't matter if you haven't read the source material (like me for this one) cause she really puts her own spin on the characters and the story.
This is a Sense and Sensibility retelling where Eleanor and Marianne are investigating the murder of their father. Marianne wants to take over her father's detective agency and Eleanor is interested in all things science, and together they use their skills to figure out what happened.
I loved the mystery in this book, it was well plotted and actually really interesting for a book set in the regency era. I would've liked more moments between Marianne and Brandon but I can understand why they took a backseat. Hopefully the author will continue to explore these characters in more books. I still have Manslaughter Park to read and after that hopefully Tirzah Price will bring out something new soon!
