What did you recently finish reading?

I finished The Favourite by Rosemary Hennigan last weekend and I actually enjoyed it a fair bit especially considering the reviews are very mixed. I thought the plot was interesting and I liked the dark academia vibes but I can understand people's reservations about how it approaches the topic of reporting sexual assaults. I thought it was well written though and much more my kind of thriller.

I then started I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makai which I know had a lot of buzz when it was released and so far I'm really liking it. I like the boarding school setting and the whole investigating a murder for a podcast thing, it's also really well told too. It's fairly chunky so it's taking me a while to get through but so far so good.

I've started a bunch of kindle books and haven't been able to get into any of them so I was grasping for something and remembered that The Husbands by Holly Gramazio was on my 25 in 25 and it had a really intriguing premise. I'm now 40% in and liking it a lot although it's so fast paced, so much has happened already and I have no idea where it's going to go from here.

I watched The Mummy last week and was itching for something with the same vibes and remembered I had What the River Knows by Isabel Ibanez on my shelf so I definitely want to pick this one up next.

Bolivian-Argentinian Inez Olivera belongs to the glittering upper society of nineteenth century Buenos Aires, and like the rest of the world, the town is steeped in old world magic that’s been largely left behind or forgotten. Inez has everything a girl might want, except for the one thing she yearns the most: her globetrotting parents—who frequently leave her behind.

When she receives word of their tragic deaths, Inez inherits their massive fortune and a mysterious guardian, an archeologist in partnership with his Egyptian brother-in-law. Yearning for answers, Inez sails to Cairo, bringing her sketch pads and an ancient golden ring her father sent to her for safekeeping before he died. But upon her arrival, the old world magic tethered to the ring pulls her down a path where she soon discovers there’s more to her parent’s disappearance than what her guardian led her to believe.

With her guardian’s infuriatingly handsome assistant thwarting her at every turn, Inez must rely on ancient magic to uncover the truth about her parent’s disappearance—or risk becoming a pawn in a larger game that will kill her.

Have you read any of these? What were your thoughts? What are you currently reading and hoping to pick up next?
