Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag 2022

I'm  a tad late getting this tag out but this is such a fun one to do and I loved doing it last year! I've read 43 books so far this year so let's find out which were my favourites.

Best book you’ve read so far in 2022

I just had so much fun reading The Outlaws Scarlett & Browne by Jonathan Stroud! It's a fast paced adventure that had tons of action and witty banter between the two main characters. I'm so excited to get my hands on a copy of the sequel that was released last week!

Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021

I mentioned last year that I don't read many sequels which again, is true of this year. I've only read 3 sequels so it's slim pickings but I enjoyed The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman, the second book in the Thursday Murder Club series almost as much as the first. I didn't love the mystery as much but I was so happy to be back with the cast of characters as they're so much fun.

New release you haven’t read yet but want to

I went to the library last week and immediately spotted Portrait of a Thief by Grace D. Li on the new releases shelf and grabbed it! I don't actually know too much about this one but I've seen the cover everywhere and I know a lot of people have been reading it. I don't read many heist novels so I'm looking forward to diving into a new sub-genre.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

It has to be Babel (and it's incredibly long title) by R.F. Kuang doesn't it? I definitely want to read more dark academia and this looks like a lush, ambitious novel that nearly everyone's anticipating! Eagerly looking forward to the August release date.

Biggest disappointment

My only 1 star of the year so far goes to Adults by Emma Jane Unsworth. I picked this up because I wanted more fiction about woman in their 20s/30s going through break-ups and ordinary life problems. This just had the most annoying main character though who spends the entire book obsessed with social media and is a total cow to her friends and family. I couldn't stand her and the writing wasn't brilliant either. At least it was a library book so no money was wasted!

Biggest surprise

I really didn't know a lot when I went into Boy Parts by Eliza Clark but holy crap, this book got dark and weird! I wasn't expecting the casualness of it either, the author just kind of slips it in there and I'm just sat with my mouth wide open in shock! It was gross at times but a fascinating read all the same!

Favorite new author (debut or new to you

Out of all the new authors I've read from this year Rachel Lynn Solomon is definitely the one who I'm most excited to read through their backlist titles. Pretty much all of her books are on my TBR for different reasons and after reading Weather Girl, I know I like her writing too.

Newest fictional crush

I don't really get fictional crushes very often but if I had to pick I'd go with Roo from The Rest of the Story by Sarah Dessen. He's the adorable childhood friend who was so sweet and supportive and just the perfect summer romance.

Newest favourite character

Pretty much every single character in The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune stole my heart! I loved this little found family of odd characters so so much!

A book that made you cry

I still don't tend to cry at books but The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa was very emotional. I'm not even a cat person but reading about the bond between human and pet pulled at my heartstrings.

A book that made you happy

Sometime in Summer by Katrina Leno was a gorgeously written book that gave me that wonderful summery feeling. I felt so nostalgic for my teenage years when I was reading it and it left me smiling long after I'd finished.

The most beautiful book you’ve bought (or received) this year

I got the gorgeous Illumicrate edition of A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross and it's so stunning in person especially the sprayed edges and incredible artwork on the end pages.

What books do you need to read by the end of the year

SO many! I'd like to make some progress in a few series like the Truly Devious series as well as fitting in some classics - I want to read more Jane Austen as well as listen to the audiobooks for The Lord of the Rings books. Other then that I'm just going to see what I'm in the mood for as I go!
