I got back into watching films last month (mostly cause it's award season and I had fomo) so with my Odeon Limitless being put to good use, here's everything I watched in January.
Anastasia (1997)
I haven't seen Anastasia since I was a kid and I was just in the mood for a fun animated film. I had total dress envy throughout this film, the music is great (Once Upon a December might be the most gorgeous original song from an animated film) and it holds up so well for a movie not released by Disney/Dreamworks.
Fackham Hall (2025)
This was awful and I had to apologize to my brother for dragging him to the cinema to see it! The trailer made it look a lot better than it was. Spoof films aren't really my thing but I thought a British one making fun of Downton Abbey might be all right. It was just really stupid and it relied too much on crude humor for laughs. It's got some great actors in it but even they couldn't save the rubbish script.
Anaconda (2025)
My brother's a big Jack Black fan so we had to go see this even though it wasn't really on my radar. This ended up being quite fun, silly but entertaining. I hate snakes but I got through it and I did laugh a fair bit!
Rental Family (2025)
I think this is my favourite watch of the month and my fave of the year so far. I didn't have many expectations going in but it really blew me away with it's gentle storytelling. This film follows a struggling actor, played by the legend that is Brendan Fraser, living in Japan who finds himself working for a company that provides you with stand ins for various situations. It's a really interesting concept and the film is charming, funny and emotional.
Marty Supreme (2025)
I'm playing a bit of catch up with the Oscar best picture nominees. I know I won't get to all of them, cause a lot of them are either not in cinema anymore or not playing at my local ones but this was one that I knew I could get to. Everyone's been raving about Timothee Chalamet's performance and I have to agree, he was very good! The film was entertaining and I can understand the hype, probably not a film I'd ever feel the need to rewatch though. Me and my brother also thought this was based on a true story so I'm quite relieved that everything was really dramatised cause that man's life was chaos!
Wind River (2017)
I remember seeing a clip of this film on TikTok and being intrigued ever since. This is a crime/drama about the investigation into a young girl's death on a Native American reservation in Wyoming. This gripped me the whole way through, I thought the plot was really well drawn out. The last 20 minutes were crazy, it was so incredibly tense. Definitely recommend this one.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026)
I enjoyed the first 28 Years Later (mostly cause of Jodie Comer) so I was definitely intrigued for the sequel but unfortunately, I don't think this one was really for me. I'm not a massive fan of horror films anyway and extreme gore is one of my least favourite things in films and this one had plenty. I had to hide behind my hands for one particular scene and get my brother to tell me when it was over! I liked the overall story and the performances were great but for me it was a bit gross at times.
Bambi (1942)
I'm attempting a whole Disney watch this year after having started last year. That includes all the shorts and animated feature films in release order and this was next on my list. I haven't watched Bambi since I was a kid so this was almost like watching it for the first time cause I didn't remember much. This is so beautifully animated though, it looked like a painting brought to life. Animated films just don't look like this anymore. Such a cute and lovely watch though.
Retirement Plan (2025)
I then finished off the month with some of the animated shorts nominated at this year's Oscars, the one's I could access through Youtube! This was my favourite out of the two, it really made me emotional and reflective about my life and how fast time is going. It highlighted how our whole lives are taken up by work with the plan to do all the rest of it when we're retired. Simple animation but very effective.
Evergreen (2025)
The other short was this very sweet story about a bear and a tree developing a friendship but the bear becomes a little greedy. I really liked the animation style, it was very colourful and vivid. The story was nice but I also feel like we've seen a million versions of this as well.
What did you watch in January? Have you seen any of these or are any on your watchlist? Leave a comment below!
