Top Ten Tuesday | To All the Books I DNF'd

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature that highlights ten books that all relate to a certain topic and is  hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This Weeks Topic Is...

Books I Never Finished. It's extremely rare that I DNF books. I'm pretty good at figuring out my reading tastes and whether I'm going to enjoy a book or not from it's description alone. However some books do slip through the cracks and, for whatever reason, I'm just not vibing with it.

Looking Out for Love by Sophia Money-Coutts

This was meant to be a cute rom-com but I couldn't get past how infuriating the main character was. She was portrayed as a typical spoiled rich girl who is forced into the real world. She also meets the man of her dreams (supposedly) and he's a walking red flag from the beginning. She was just far too naïve and ditzy for my taste.

One Snowy Week in Springhollow by Lucy Knott

Again, I just wanted a cute Christmas romance but the main character was horrendous. She was very woe me and blamed everything wrong in her life on her best friend moving away when they were teenagers. She couldn't see how selfish and absorbed she was so this book got abandoned halfway through cause I couldn't see it improving.

American Royals by Katherine McGee

This isn't so much annoying characters as just characters I didn't vibe with. I've always struggled with reading about royal characters in modern day settings and this alternate version of America with a royal family was one I just couldn't get behind. I remember not caring about any of the characters or their storylines so off to the DNF pile it went.

The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks

As you can probably tell, romance is not my go to genre but I gave this audiobook a try back when I still listened to audiobooks! I read a few Nicholas Sparks books when I was a teenager but as an adult it just didn't hit the same. I listened to the first 25% and was so bored by the story that I simply gave up continuing.

The Main Character by Jaclyn Goldis

This should've been something I enjoyed based off the blurb but for a thriller, there was nothing gripping about it. I feel like in this genre if you're not hooked in the first 50-70 pages then something's just not working.

The Christmas Killer by Alex Pine

Interesting premise, poor execution. Bland characters and when I DNF'd the storyline was just going nowhere.

The Meeting Point by Olivia Lara

I was supposed to be on a blog tour for this book but I hated the set up so much. The plot was wildly ridiculous (woman finds out her boyfriend is cheating and miraculously falls in love with the Lyft driver who finds his phone - all through text) and the writing wasn't that great either.

Lady Macbeth by Ava Reid

I was highly anticipating this book so imagine how disappointed I was when I got 10% into this and just couldn't find the will to pick it back up again. It was just so boring! From reviews it seems you either love or absolutely hate this book and alas, I am in the latter group.

The Panopticon by Jenni Fagan

I couldn't even tell you the plot of this one, I've blocked the majority of what I read from my mind. I remember just not enjoying the writing choices of this one, it was just weird and made me a little uncomfortable.

Milkman by Anna Burns

I'm sure I got more than halfway through this before coming to the realisation that this book was not for me. This was a Man Booker Prize winner and possibly too literary for my tastes, with extremely long paragraphs and dull writing choices. Had no idea what was going and didn't care enough to finish it.

Have you read any of these or are any of them on your TBR? Did you DNF any of them? Leave a comment or link your own Top Ten Tuesday's for me to check out! Happy Reading!

  1. I think it’s cool that you generally don’t DNF.

  2. I read American Royals and it was just meh to me. So I never picked up the rest of the series.
