New year, a new set of books to add to my wishlist... 

French Kissing in New York by Anne-Sophie Jouhanneau

Whilst I definitely don't read much YA contemporary anymore, this is recommended for fans of Emily in Paris which is a complete guilty pleasure of mine. Plus, it's good to mix up my reading with some lighter options. 

Exes and O's by Amy Lea

This is just giving pure What's Your Number rom-com vibes and I'm more then happy to picture Chris Evans as the love interest...

 

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily's research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones--the most elusive of all faeries--lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all--her own heart.

I'm not usually a fan of fairies/fae in books, it's just one of those fantasy elements that's never interested me but I could be down for a book aimed at an adult audience with academic rivals and shadowy forests. 

City of Nightmares by Rebecca Schaeffer

But being a member of maybe-cult has a price. In order to prove herself, Ness cons her way into what’s supposed to be a simple job for the organization—only for it to blow up in her face. Literally. Tangled up in the aftermath of an explosive assassination, now Ness and the only other survivor—a Nightmare boy who Ness suspects is planning to eat her—must find their way back to Newham and uncover the sinister truth behind the attack, even as the horrors of her past loom ominously near.

If you didn't read sister became a man-eating spider and slaughtered her way through town and immediately add it to your TBR then I don't know what to tell you...  

The Daughters of Izdihar by Hadeer Elsbai

Released → 10th January 2023

As a waterweaver, Nehal can move and shape any water to her will, but she's limited by her lack of formal education. She desires nothing more than to attend the newly opened Weaving Academy, take complete control of her powers, and pursue a glorious future on the battlefield with the first all-female military regiment. A fantasy about women with forbidden elemental magic fighting for women's rights? Absolutely!

Spare by Prince Harry

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix

Every childhood home is haunted, and each of us are possessed by our parents.

When their parents die at the tail end of the coronavirus pandemic, Louise and Mark Joyner are devastated but nothing can prepare them for how bad things are about to get. The two siblings are almost totally estranged, and couldn’t be more different. Now, however, they don’t have a choice but to get along. The virus has passed, and both of them are facing bank accounts ravaged by the economic meltdown. Their one asset? Their childhood home. They need to get it on the market as soon as possible because they need the money. Yet before her parents died they taped newspaper over the mirrors and nailed shut the attic door.

Sometimes we feel like puppets, controlled by our upbringing and our genes. Sometimes we feel like our parents treat us like toys, or playthings, or even dolls. The past can ground us, teach us, and keep us safe. It can also trap us, and bind us, and suffocate the life out of us. As disturbing events stack up in the house, Louise and Mark have to learn that sometimes the only way to break away from the past, sometimes the only way to sell a haunted house, is to burn it all down.

So I've only read one Grady Hendrix book (and gave it five stars) but all of his books just seem like ones I'm gonna love. 

Locust Lane by Stephen Amidon

But when a young woman is found dead in the nicest part of town, the powerful neighbors close ranks to keep their families safe. Their parents, each with motivations of their own, only complicate the picture: they will do anything to protect their children, even at the others’ expense.

I find these kinds of books so interesting, the lengths parents go to to protect their children. 

Hell Bent (Alex Stern #2) by Leigh Bardugo

Released → 17th January 2023

I'm not even going to read the synopsis cause I haven't read Ninth House yet so don't want spoilers but it's a sequel that's definitely on my radar.  

The Drift by C.J. Tudor

A former detective, Meg awakens to a gentle rocking. They are heading to a mysterious place known to them only as "The Retreat," but when they discover a dead man among their ranks and Meg spies a familiar face, she realizes that there is something far more insidious going on.

Carter is gazing out the window of the abandoned ski chalet that he and his ragtag compatriots call home. Together, they manage a precarious survival, manufacturing vaccines against a deadly virus in exchange for life's essentials. But as their generator begins to waver, the threat of something lurking in the chalet's depths looms larger, and their fragile bonds will be tested when the power finally fails--for good.

The imminent dangers faced by Hannah, Meg, and Carter are each one part of the puzzle. Lurking in their shadows is an even greater threat--one that threatens to consume all of humanity.

I love the sound of the three separate storylines as well as the underlying horror/dystopian elements. I loved The Burning Girls so I'm eager to pick up more from this author. 

The Cloisters by Katy Hays

Ann Stilwell arrives in New York City, hoping to spend her summer working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Instead, she is assigned to The Cloisters, a gothic museum and garden renowned for its medieval and Renaissance collections.

There she is drawn into a small circle of charismatic but enigmatic researchers, each with their own secrets and desires, including the museum's curator, Patrick Roland, who is convinced that the history of Tarot holds the key to unlocking contemporary fortune telling.

Relieved to have left her troubled past behind and eager for the approval of her new colleagues, Ann is only too happy to indulge some of Patrick's more outlandish theories. But when Ann discovers a mysterious, once-thought lost deck of 15th-century Italian tarot cards she suddenly finds herself at the centre of a dangerous game of power, toxic friendship and ambition.

And as the game being played within the Cloisters spirals out of control, Ann must decide whether she is truly able to defy the cards and shape her own future . . .

This is already on pre-order and I'm eagerly awaiting the publication date here in the UK cause it sounds amazing!

The Miniscule Mansion of Myra Malone by Audrey Burges

This is also giving The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton vibes. I remember liking that book and it just sounds really interesting. 

Begin Again by Emma Lord

As usual, Andie Rose has a plan: Transfer from community college to the hyper competitive Blue Ridge State, major in psychology, and maintain her lifelong goal of becoming an iconic self-help figure despite the nerves that have recently thrown her for a loop. But the moment Andie arrives, the rest of her plans go off the rails. Her rocky relationship with her boyfriend Connor only gets more complicated when she discovers he transferred out of Blue Ridge to her community college. Sounds super cute and I've been searching for some romance set in college. 

The Buried and the Bound by Rochelle Hassan

Curses, hedgewitches, queer characters. So excited for this one!
