February 2021 TBR

January wasn't my best start to the year, I had a bit of a slumpy start at the beginning of the month but overall I'm happy with what I read. I've lessened the amount of books on my TBR this month by a significant amount as having too many books on there makes me feel super unaccomplished if I don't manage to get to them all. I'm taking part in a readathon this month and that's my main focus as well as getting to some of my old Netgalley ARC's as well.

I'm taking part in the next round of Pixarthon which is focusing on Toy Story and is aptly named Woody's Roundup Readathon hosted by @literarylily1. I'm joining #TeamAlsToyBarn for this and I love how much work has gone into creating this readathon, from creating the teams to how you participate. Each team has to collect a certain group of toys (each toy has a different prompt) and you can also steal toys from other teams by reading a book from someone's elses TBR. It's a lot clearer in the PDF so I'll just link that here!

Team BookStrange the Dreamer by Lainie Taylor

Buzz • Read a Sci-Fi Book 🚀 An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green
Tourguide Barbie • A Book Set In a Place You Would Like To Visit ✈ The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
Emperor Zurg • A Book That Features a Villain 👿 I'm going to be using my free pass from reading Strange the Dreamer to collect this toy!
Jessie • A Book with a Strong Female Lead 💪 Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Bullseye • A Book with an Animal On the Cover 🦊 Among the Beasts and Briars by Ashley Poston
Stinky Pete • A Book With Gold Foiling 🌟 The Book of Tomorrow by Cecelia Ahearn

Some other books i'm hoping to get to this month are:

I think this could be quite manageable so here's to a good reading month! Happy Reading!

Owlcrate December 2020 Unboxing | Love Is A Battlefield

This might be my last Owlcrate unboxing for a while as I decided to skip my renewals for January and February as the books just didn't interest me enough to justify the cost. We shall see what March's theme is and then I'll make a final decision about whether to cancel it completely or not. Anyway, this is super late going up as it took almost two months for the box to get to me because of the whole UK borders closing debacle. It eventually arrived and even though most people will have already seen what's in it, I still wanted to get my post up.

December's theme was Love Is A Battlefield and the book included this month was super highly anticipated by just about everybody. I've been so excited for this box so let's dive in to what we got...

My Five Star Predictions for 2021

I'm always hoping that the next book I read is going to be a five star/a new favourite because as readers we always want to enjoy every single book to the max. Saying that, I'm a fickle being and therefore I very rarely give out five stars because there's nearly always something holding me back. Out of the 78 books that I read in 2020, around 15 of them I gave 5 stars and I really want to read as many as I can in 2021. I've put together a list of ten books that I think could become new favourites and that I've been wanting to read for so long, I have no idea if I'll even get to them all this year but we'll give it a shot!

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab

Because I lost my blogging mojo for a while and therefore this post is going up later then I wanted it to, I have actually already read two of the books on this list. Luckily, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue was a five star read! 🥰 I actually started this one in late December and then finished it at the beginning of the month but my god, this book is so beautiful. V. E. Schwab's writing is stunning, there are so many quotable sentences in here that I must have bookmarked about 50 of them. I already want to reread it but I'm very happy it lived up to the hype and ended up as a new favourite.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

This is my current read at the time of writing this and I'm about 180 pages in and really, really liking it so far. I got this in the October Owlcrate box without knowing too much about it but then everyone seemed to be reading it and completely loving it. I think it could be a five star because although fantasy isn't my go to genre I do find myself more and more intrigued by a lot of books that fall into that category. The fact that it's got elements of the King Arthur legend is also a massive pull as I just really like Arthurian legend and anything that is inspired by it. So far it's looking promising but obviously I won't know for sure until I'm done!

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

This is the other book on this list that I've already read but unfortunately this one didn't get the full five start treatment from me. I did really enjoy and it came out as a high five star read for me on my tracking spreadsheet but something was stopping me from adoring it. I think maybe it was the pacing that left me a little underwhelmed as this book follows a young women being able to enter multiple lives she could of lived and when reading it there were time where I wanted some sections to be more detailed or just more in depth. I did love the message though and the main character was really relatable too.

City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty

Like I said fantasy isn't what I usually read but I have a kind of gut feeling about this series. So much that I already own the first two books. A lot of people rave about this series and I really want to jump on the hype train! This book follows a young woman in 18th century Cairo who accidentally summons a djinn and is swept up in magic and politics. I'm excited about this one but I think it's a case of having to be in the right mood to pick it up.

Emma by Jane Austen

I've read two Jane Austen novels so far, Mansfield Park and Pride and Prejudice although I do own her entire works. Both of those were four stars for me and I know a lot of people like Emma so I'm crossing my fingers that this one could be the first to get five stars. I've seen a few adaptations of this novel and again, I just have that gut feeling that I'm going to end up enjoying reading the source material. I'm hoping I'll be able to squeeze this book into a future TBR.

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

Magical realism, sprawling mansions and strange books with secret doors?? I still don't know why I haven't picked this one up yet. I do this a lot with books I'm highly anticipating, I delay reading them because I'm scared that my feelings are going to be disappointed. How many times can I say I have a good feeling in this post? This is recommended for those whole loved Addie LaRue, The Night Circus and The Midnight Library so I probably shouldn't be that worried.

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

It's pretty much a crime at this point that I haven't read anything by this author, yep not even Evelyn Hugo which is like the book community's darling. I know that there is a mini series in the works though with Riley Keogh and Sam Claflin so I definitely want to get it read sooner rather than later. I feel like I'm going to like the format as well because apparently it's told through interviews and the like, which I always really enjoy.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

I'm sat here laughing because I still can't believe this is still sitting on my shelf unread. I mean I own the whole trilogy already because I think I'm going to adore these books but it's another case of putting it off so I can keep that anticipatory feeling a little longer. Everyone loves the books so I somone just tell me to pick them up already please!

The City We Became by N. K. Jemisin

The premise of this one sounds so bizarre and yet so intriguing and wonderful at the same time. Cities with souls and protectors? I love New York City (I've never been but I just know, ok!), if I could choose any city in the world to visit right now, New York would be it. This book is described as a love letter to the city so that's all I really need to know plus there's fantastical, speculative stuff going on too so I'm already there.

Threadneedle by Cari Thomas

The noise that came out of me when I found out that I got approved for an ARC of this on netgalley was not human 😂 but seriously I am so excited to get to this book, it unreal. I love anything, witchy and magical so I have seriously high hopes for this. Plus I can't put if off for much longer as the ARC needs to be read before May!

So, those are the ten books I have slighly too high expectations for!  I'm going to do my absolute best to get to them all this year and I'm keeping everything crossed that I love them as much as I think i'm going to! Happy Reading!

Top Ten Tuesday | 2021 Goals

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature that highlights ten books that all relate to a certain topic and is  hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This Weeks Topic Is...

2021 Resolutions/Hopes and to be honest, I've never been particularly good at sticking to the types of things. I have a lot of motivation at the beginning but by February I've pretty much abandoned them. There are a few goals that I'd like to reach and some things I'd like to stick with but I'm not going to beat myself up to much if I don't because life.

#5OnMyTBR | Graphic Novels

This meme was created by E. @ Local Bee Hunter's Nook and you can find the announcement post here. Also, side note, these aren't necessarily books that I own physically but they're all on my Goodreads TBR and they'll mostly be the five most recently added.

This Week's Prompt is...

Graphic Novels and I'll admit that graphic novels and comics are probably some of my least read formats. I find them difficult to read in ebook form but then they're also crazy expensive to buy physically so I never seem to be able to get to any that I want to. Hopefully this will change in the future but for now here's five of them that I will be buying as soon as I have the funds to!

WWW Wednesday | 06/01/2021

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Taking On a World of Words that highlights three questions:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you'll read next?

What did you recently finish reading?

I just adored The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab, not only is it my first read of 2021, it's also my first five stars of the year which is an amazing start. The writing is what truly makes this book so wonderful because just every passage brought out so many emotions and thoughts, I must have bookmarked about 30 quotes in one sitting. I'm not gonna gush too much because I'll be doing a full review but yeah, amazing book.

What are you currently reading?

Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater is the companion novel to the Wolved of Mercy Falls series which I read the whole of last year (it feels weird referring to 2020 as last year!) and has some mixed feelings about. I owned this book as well so I just decided to get it over with and finish the series properly. I'm less then a 100 pages in and already I'm not sure if I'm enjoying Cole's and Isabelle's POV's when they're not mixed in with Grace and Sam's but I'm still going to push through.

I started listening to Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie on audio a few days ago and I'm really enjoying it. I've seen the film so I know all the plot twists but Kenneth Branagh is a terrific narrator and is really making the story come alive.

All I Want For Christmas by Wendy Loggia is a library ebook that I started late December but just haven't managed to finish yet and because it's a library book I don't want to just return it because I am enjoying it. This has been really cute so far and i'm loving the romance that starting to happen so whilst it's a bit strange to be reading a festive book in January I'm going to try and finish this today or tomorrow.

What do you think you'll read next?

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig is a book that I've wanted to pick up for a while. I wanted to buy a physical copy but my local bookshop was sold out so I'm making do with library ebook instead. I've heard nothing but amazing things about this novel and just the sound of a magical library where you can see your infinite lives sounds incredible.

Have you read any of these? What were your thoughts? What are you currently reading and hoping to pick up next? Leave a comment or link your own WWW Wednesdays below for me to check out!

Top Ten Tuesday | Most Anticipated YA Releases January - June 2021

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature that highlights ten books that all relate to a certain topic and is  hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This Weeks Topic Is...

Most Anticipated Releases for the First Half of 2021. I always like making these lists because it gives me a chance to scroll through all the new releases and find some that weren't initially on my radar. Now, there are a lot of books coming out this year that I'm excited about so really this is just a handful of them and these are just the YA ones too!

Into the Heartless Wood by Joanna Ruth Meyer

Release Date: January 12th 2021

The forest is a dangerous place, where siren song lures men and women to their deaths. For centuries, a witch has harvested souls to feed the heartless tree, using its power to grow her domain.

When Owen Merrick is lured into the witch’s wood, one of her tree-siren daughters, Seren, saves his life instead of ending it. Every night, he climbs over the garden wall to see her, and every night her longing to become human deepens. But a shift in the stars foretells a dangerous curse, and Seren’s quest to become human will lead them into an ancient war raging between the witch and the king who is trying to stop her.

Give me all the witchy, fairytale-esque books right now! I am so drawn to this book just from the cover and the synopsis and I really, really want to get my hands on a copy as soon as possible.

Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo

Release Date: January 19th 2021

Seventeen-year-old Lily Hu can’t remember exactly when the question took root, but the answer was in full bloom the moment she and Kathleen Miller walked under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club.

America in 1954 is not a safe place for two girls to fall in love, especially not in Chinatown. Red-Scare paranoia threatens everyone, including Chinese Americans like Lily. With deportation looming over her father—despite his hard-won citizenship—Lily and Kath risk everything to let their love see the light of day.

I was drawn to that cover immediately and also, I'm really interested in reading more YA historical fiction at the moment and so here for lesbians in 50's San Francisco!

Lo never thought she could afford to believe in Lev Warren . . . but now she doesn't know if she can afford not to.

I absolutely adored Sadie by Courtney Summers and therefore I now want to read everything that she's ever written. Cults and a fractures sister relationship, sign me up.

Wench by Maxine Kaplan

Release Date: January 19th 2021

Tanya has worked at her tavern since she was able to see over the bar. She broke up her first fight at 11. By the time she was a teenager she knew everything about the place, and she could run it with her eyes closed. She’d never let anyone—whether it be a drunkard or a captain of the queen’s guard—take advantage of her. But when her guardian dies, she might lose it all: the bar, her home, her purpose in life. So she heads out on a quest to petition the queen to keep the tavern in her name—dodging unscrupulous guards, a band of thieves, and a powerful, enchanted feather that seems drawn to her. Fast-paced, magical, and unapologetically feminist, Wench is epic fantasy like you’ve never seen it before.

This sounds like such an original, funny story and I love books that involve the characters going on some sort of quest.

What Big Teeth by Rose Szabo

Release Date: February 2nd 2021

Eleanor has not seen or spoken with her family in years, not since they sent her away to Saint Brigid's boarding school. She knows them only as vague memories: her grandfather's tremendous fanged snout, the barrel full of water her mother always soaked in, and strange hunting trips in a dark wood with her sister and cousins. And she remembers the way they looked at her, like she was the freak.

When Eleanor finally finds the courage to confront her family and return to their ancestral home on the rainy coast of Maine, she finds them already gathered in wait, seemingly ready to welcome her back with open arms. "I read this in the cards," her grandmother tells her. However, Grandma Persephone doesn't see all, for just as Eleanor is beginning to readjust to the life she always longed for, a strange and sudden death rocks the family, leaving Eleanor to manage this difficult new dynamic without help.

In order to keep the family that abandoned her from falling apart, Eleanor calls upon her mysterious other grandmother, Grandmere, from across the sea. Grandmere brings order to the chaotic household, but that order soon turns to tyranny. If any of them are to survive, Eleanor must embrace her strange family and join forces with the ghost of Grandma Persephone to confront the monstrousness lurking deep within her Grandmere-and herself.

I'm so excited for this one, I mean it's described as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children meets the Addams Family! I shall be saving this one for Halloween time I think.

Tracking the book to an obscure but enchanting bookstore in Michigan, Amelia is shocked to find herself face-to-face with the enigmatic and handsome N. E. This novel has been getting incredible reviews from those who've read it early and they've describes it as a book that will rip your heart out and therefore I must read it!

The Mirror Season by Anna-Marie McLemore

Release Date: March 16th 2021

Graciela Cristales' whole world changes after she and a boy she barely knows are assaulted at the same party. She loses her gift for making enchanted pan dulce. Neighborhood trees vanish overnight, while mirrored glass appears, bringing reckless magic with it. And Ciela is haunted by what happened to her, and what happened to the boy whose name she never learned.

But when the boy, Lock, shows up at Ciela's school, he has no memory of that night, and no clue that a single piece of mirrored glass is taking his life apart. Ciela decides to help him, which means hiding the truth about that night. Because Ciela knows who assaulted her, and him. And she knows that her survival, and his, depend on no one finding out what really happened.

I've never even read anything from Anna-Marie McLemore before but I already have a feeling that I'm going to love her books. I always really enjoy magical realism in fiction and I'm hoping they become a new favourite author.

House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland

Release Date: April 16th 2021

Seventeen-year-old Iris Hollow has always been strange. Something happened to her and her two older sisters when they were children, something they can’t quite remember but that left each of them with an identical half-moon scar at the base of their throats.

Iris has spent most of her teenage years trying to avoid the weirdness that sticks to her like tar. But when her eldest sister, Grey, goes missing under suspicious circumstances, Iris learns just how weird her life can get: horned men start shadowing her, a corpse falls out of her sister’s ceiling, and ugly, impossible memories start to twist their way to the forefront of her mind.

As Iris retraces Grey’s last known footsteps and follows the increasingly bizarre trail of breadcrumbs she left behind, it becomes apparent that the only way to save her sister is to decipher the mystery of what happened to them as children.

The closer Iris gets to the truth, the closer she comes to understanding that the answer is dark and dangerous – and that Grey has been keeping a terrible secret from her for years.

I think this might possibly be my most anticipated of this list, maybe? I am just so intrigued and it's shelved under so many different genres; thriller, magical realism, paranormal, fantasy... Also, it might have one of my favourite covers of 2021 already!

Eat Your Heart Out by Kelly Devos

Release Date: 29th June 2021

In the next few hours, one of three things will happen.

1--We'll be rescued (unlikely)

2--We'll freeze to death (maybe)

3--We'll be eaten by thin and athletic zombies (odds: excellent)

Vivian Ellenshaw is fat, but she knows she doesn't need to lose weight, so she's none too happy to find herself forced into a weight-loss camp's van with her ex-best friend, Allie, a meathead jock who can barely drive, and the camp owner's snobby son. And when they arrive at Camp Featherlite at the start of the worst blizzard in the history of Flagstaff, Arizona, it's clear that something isn't right.

Vee barely has a chance to meet the other members of her pod, all who seem as unhappy to be at Featherlite as she does, when a camper goes missing down by the lake. Then she spots something horrifying outside in the snow. Something...that isn't human. Plus, the camp's supposed "miracle cure" for obesity just seems fishy, and Vee and her fellow campers know they don't need to be cured. Of anything.

Even worse, it's not long before Camp Featherlite's luxurious bungalows are totally overrun with zombies. What starts out as a mission to unravel the camp's secrets turns into a desperate fight for survival--and not all of the Featherlite campers will make it out alive.

That cover is glorious! I'm not usually a big fan of zombies but I can totally get behind this book because it sounds hilarious and super fun.

In the Ravenous Dark by A.M. Strickland

Release Date: May 18th 2021

In Thanopolis, those gifted with magic are assigned undead spirits to guard them—and control them. Ever since Rovan’s father died trying to keep her from this fate, she’s hidden her magic. But when she accidentally reveals her powers, she’s bound to a spirit and thrust into a world of palace intrigue and deception.

Desperate to escape, Rovan finds herself falling for two people she can’t fully trust: Lydea, a beguiling, rebellious princess; and Ivrilos, the handsome spirit with the ability to control Rovan, body and soul.

Together, they uncover a secret that will destroy Thanopolis. To save them all, Rovan will have to start a rebellion in both the mortal world and the underworld, and find a way to trust the princess and spirit battling for her heart—if she doesn’t betray them first.

This is the only kind of pure fantasy that I have on this list and that is because it's about a pansexual bloodmage! I am excited and you should be too!

What are some of you're most anticipated books for the first half of 2021? Did any of these make your list? Leave a comment or link your own Top Ten Tuesday's for me to check out! Happy Reading!

December 2020 Reading Wrap Up

I completely failed my December TBR. I managed to read 6 books last month and only five of those were actually on my fixed TBR, as one of them I started in November and then finished at the beginning of the month. I really don't know what happened. I was doing fine for the first two weeks and then bam, reading slump just hit me out of nowhere. I'm really sad that I didn't get to most of the books that I wanted to. Time really got away from me and I've been so busy and distracted by Christmas and so I haven't finished a book in nearly two weeks. I'm really hoping that I can start 2021 off well and get some serious reading done.

Stats

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

I read this book at the very beginning of the month and it was such a wonderful story. Beautifully written in stunning verse, this was a truly special story that I adored. Filled with so many quotable moments, this is a really inspiring story of two sisters who discover the other exists after a plane crash kills their father. Both characters have such strong voices and their emerging bond really shines through. I'd urge everyone to pick this one up even if you're not a big fan of books written in verse (like me) because you may end up surpising yourself. You can read my full review here.

Fox 8 by George Saunders

This was a short story that I only really read because I needed a book to fit a prompt read a book with a fox on the cover for the Reindeer Readathon and after searching for a while I found this one on my library app so just went ahead and borrowed it. This was a strange read, it's super short, only around 50 pages and is told from the point of view of a fox who has begun to learn our language from listening to bedtime stories outside of houses. I understood what the author was trying to do with it but I just couldn't get past the writing style. It was purposefully written with spelling and grammar mistakes to reflect how the fox has come to understand English but it was just a chore to read through. It was interesting and had a strong message but not one that's really stuck with me.

Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone

This is the second middle grade book that I've read from Abi Elphenstone and she's quickly becoming an author that I just want to read everything from! She creates such vivid worlds and characters that I truly feel like I've been sucked straight into the story. Sky Song takes place in Erkenwald, a kingdom overthrown by an evil ice witch and three children who fight to save their families and their tribes. Eska,  Flint and Flint's sister Blue are brilliant characters to follow on this adventure and I loved learning about their pasts and the strength that they find to create their own paths. I'm truly looking forward to reading Elphinstone's other books.

Forever (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #3) by Maggie Stiefvater

In the conclusion to the series, Forever is a decent ending for these characters and their journey. I gave it an extra half star more then the other two probably not because I enjoyed it more but because I liked how everything came full circle and it was a fitting end. It's a super fast paced read and it's easy to get through. I will say that it felt quite repetitive at times just because Grace and Sam go on pretty similar journeys and a lot of the werewolf side of things tends to be the same as what's happened in the first two books. I did like Isabelle and Cole even more in this book so I'm interested to see how their story continues in Sinner.

Are You Sleeping by Kathleen Barber

I ended up being quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this mystery/thriller just because I borrowed it on a whim not really knowing anything about it. We follow Josie, as she returns to her hometown and the life she left behind following the death of her mother after not having been back for ten years after her father was murdered. There's a lot of little details and twists that occur in this book that put my mind in a spin as there's a fair bit going on. I really liked the podcast element of this book the most though, It was interspersed between chapters and gives us little insights into past events and how the reinvestigation is going. I thought it was very well written and whilst the final twist is guessable, it was still well executed.

10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston

This was such a fun, festive contemporary. I loved the idea behind the plot; heartbroken after a recent break up, Sophie's family decided to set her up on ten blind dates over the Christmas period to help her move on and chaos and fun ensues. A lot of the time people find contemporaries too predictable but even though you could probably map out the whole thing ten pages in, I still love it because it makes me feel happy and content. I will admit, Sophie has a lot of family members and I found it so hard to keep track of who was who and how they were all connected. This book has a lot of heart and hilarious situations and was the perfect read for the time of year.

One Snowy Week in Springhollow by Lucy Knott

Unfortunately, the last book on this list is a DNF. I don't know if this is what kicked off my slump but I just could not force myself to finish this and I tried. Hard. I got halfway before I finally gave up because I could not do it to myself any longer. I'm sure a lot of people will like this book and I'm very frustrated that I wasn't one of those people. The main character, Scarlett, just got on my nerves SO MUCH. She just wouldn't except the blame for anything and forced everything that's gone wrong in her life onto the fact that her best friend moved away at sixteen. But she doesn't see it as him moving away, she sees it as him abandoning her on purpose. No, that's not what happened, his parents made him move but she acts like it's completely his fault. I struggled through it for over a week before I abandoned ship.

So, that's everything I read in December. Hopefully it's all uphill from here!

January 2021 TBR

Happy New Year! I can't believe we're in a new year already. 2020 felt like it went so slow but sped by at the same time. Here's hoping to a better and brighter 2021!

So, I thought my reading in November was bad but it was nothing compared to the trainwreck that was December. I don't know if I was just so burned out from the rest of the year but I haven't finished a book in nearly two weeks and I'm writing this on the last day of December! Everything that I was picking up I just wasn't into and then I just didn't pick up anything for days and days. I only managed to read 6 books and one of those was a novella! Fingers crossed that I can kick off 2021 with a good reading month.

Saying that, considering I didn't manage to read that much last month, I've put 13 books on my January TBR because apparently I hate myself and want myself to suffer from a nervous breakdown! I planned out my TBR at the beginning of December when my reading was actually going well so that's why there's so much on there!

I'm really excited about a lot of these books, particularly Legendborn by Tracy Deonn and The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. The Girl in the Tower was on my TBR last month but I just couldn't get out of my reading slump so I'm going to give it another try this month. I haven't got a non-fiction book this month but I will be reading The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick for my classic pick.

Physical Books

Ebooks

Audiobooks

That's everything on my TBR, not going to lie, I'm slightly worried but I'm not going to put too much pressure on myself and I'm aiming for at least 10 of these getting read or at the very least all of my physical books! Happy Reading, I hope you have a great start to 2021!
